Press Release (Special Kids Special Families)

“By working together, we can build something better…transforming lives one community at a time,” is Lowe’s motto and mission.  The deck and fence at Zach’s Place, a licensed child/respite care and skill building center for children with disabilities, needed repair along with a good coat of paint.  The playground sand was scattered everywhere, getting into everything and the playground equipment needed much TLC too.  But not anymore, thanks to the many volunteers from Lowe's stores #2423 at North Nevada and #2578 at Briargate and Union who stepped right in and helped improve our Zach's Place facility!  Thanks to Lowe’s Heroes, the corporation’s employee volunteer program, our backyard play area was transformed and built into something much greater than we ever hoped for or expected!

Becca Silver, Lowe's HR Manager who organized this hardworking group of volunteers said, “A great part of working on this project was seeing the kids look out the window smiling and waving looking very anxious to come out and play”.  Lowe’s employee volunteer program started nationally 10 years ago with an emphasis on community improvement and team building; with employees wearing their signature color red and blue t-shirts.  Over 175 combined volunteer hours were put into completing this project and Lowe's contributed over $4000 in materials!  They redesigned the backyard space making a significant difference in improving the play area for our kids at Zach's Place.

“The kids especially love the chalkboard paint put on the picnic table and the outdoor chalkboard they installed. They use it every chance they get!” said Renae Isakson, Program Director.  Zach’s Place, a program of Special Kids Special Families, offers a unique home-like environment; and allows families who are struggling to raise a child with disabilities a much needed break. The main focus of the program is to provide quality care with nurturing and knowledgeable staff who assist the youth in achieving their greatest level of independence through education, socialization and life skills.  “The kids enjoy being outside now that our backyard space has been improved, as we see our kids want to play outside even more,” says Executive Director, Linda Ellegard. “We can’t thank Lowe’s enough for all their hard work and willingness to volunteer at Zach’s Place.  They really are heroes in our eyes!”

To inquire about volunteer opportunities at SKSF, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at (719)447-8983 x20.  There are several ways you can help to support Zach’s Place.  Donate in any amount, by giving online through Indy Give now through the end of December at: www.IndyGive.com/SKSF.  By donating through Indy Give, your donation is matched dollar for dollar thanks to several matching grants.  You’ll also receive some great rewards from area businesses with a minimum donation of $50.  Help us reach our goal during this campaign and raise needed funds for Zach’s Place!  For other ways to donate and additional information about Zach’s Place and Special Kids Special Families, visit our website at www.SKSFcolorado.org.

Three Delights Caribbean Grill is now open at 4747 Flintridge Drive in Colorado Springs. (near Flintridge and Academy Blvd)

From their website: "Three Delights Caribbean Grill brings a taste of the islands to the Rockies.  Our goal is to offer authentic Caribbean cuisine similar to what is to be found in a typical Bahamian home.

The proprietors of the restaurant are from the Bahamas; a tropical haven of seven hundred islands and cays approximately 30 miles off the coast Florida.  Although you can find almost any international food in the Bahamas, traditional Bahamian cuisine is influenced by varied roots primarily those of European and African origins that have been blended with complimentary spices and fruits found in the islands.

The Bahamas is renowned for its beautiful sun, sand & sea complimented by the warmth of it's people and their hospitality.  It is commonplace to welcome visitors with a great food, drink and conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.  Three Delights Caribbean Grill is a casual dine in or take out restaurant that seeks to offer you a true taste of the Bahamas."

Small Busiiness Saturday is an annual promotion started by American Express to promote small businesses as well as use of the American Express cards.

This year, November 24th will mark the third year of the program.

How it works: Card members must register their cards at shopsmall.com, during the registration period (this year's started Nov 18th and registrations are limited). Corporate and prepaid cards are not eligible and online purchases don't qualify.

If the card member then spends at least $25 in a single transaction at a qualifying small merchant, they'll get a $25 statement credit on their Amex account within the next 8 weeks.

The promotion resulted in 100 million qualified transactions last year, and given buzz on the social pages and AMEX making free marketing materials available to merchants, this year is likely to be even bigger.

It really is a smart promotion on the part of AMEX. They get crowd sourced marketing. They generate goodwill buy supporting small shops at no cost to the shop owner, card holders get to support a local business at little or no cost to themselves and AMEX gets a surge in transactions on their cards.  Well done, I must say.
