On November 15, 2019, New Summit Charter Academy, a K-8 charter school in Academy School District 20, finished collecting over 5,700 lbs of non-perishable food to donate for Thanksgiving. The food, along with $1,260 will be donated to a group of New Summit families in need. Any food that is left over will be donated to the Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs.

New Summit families brought in enough food donations to surpass the goal set by the school of 2,000 lbs. New Summit parent volunteer, Heather Kennedy, who played a big part in the origination and planning of the idea was amazed to see how much the school rallied together to not only meet and nearly triple the school’s original goal but to help the school’s families and the community.

Khalila Saeed, Care and Share’s Food Procurement Coordinator says, “For a school of this size-especially being an elementary school, the total amount of money and food donated is astounding.” New Summit was able to donate over 1,100 lbs in food to the Care and Share Food Bank after the school’s families in need were helped.
