Sarges’ Grill in Fountain, Colorado, is of course, open to everyone, but the two active duty partners, David Parker and Glenn McDowell, would like to make it absolutely clear, “We’re military”. This is a place for soldiers, past and present to come with the family, have a great meal and a good time.
Dave Parker first joined the military in 1985. He returned to civilian life in 1993. He was tending bar in Louisiana when a bar owner offered him an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. He said he wanted to sell his place cheap. Dave called his bluff and about $400 later, he was the owner of the Lakeside in Lake Arthur. He owned and operated the bar for a couple of years before selling it and reenlisting in the Army, shortly after 9/11.
He was driven by love of country to go back in, but he was also now bitten by the entrepreneur bug. Even while serving in Afghanistan, his mind was also on business. He thought about the bar, restaurants, deli’s, things he liked about them, things he would do differently, given the opportunity. When he was stationed at Fort Carson, he decided to put some of those ideas into practice. He bought both a coffee shop and a deli in 2012 and 2013, and now has teamed up with fellow soldier Glenn McDowell to launch Sarges’ Grill.
Glenn and David are both assigned to 2d Bde, 4th ID at Fort Carson. Glenn brings over 25 years of restaurant experience to the table. He’s done everything from dishwasher to bar tender, waiter, cook to general manager at places like Carraba’s, Denny’s, IHOP and a 5-star cajun joint in California named Dingo McGee’s. Dave’s wife, Peg Parker (nicknamed ‘Pegatron’ for her energy and drive) is both manager and front of the house.
Sarges’ offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, a complete cafe (including two top-of-the line espresso machines and fresh roasted beans from Serrano’s of Monument) and a bar with several flat screen TV’s.
The restaurant has only been open a few days so far, but the anecdotal evidence looks good. Some folks from the Fountain Fire Department have been by and suggested a couple of their own favorite recipes, which David says will soon be appearing on the menu as specials. They’re also open to featuring other local favorites, so bring ‘em in. Meanwhile, on Facebook, area resident Zach Riggs says “Awesome food and outstanding service, …they have the best pancakes I have ever had. Another thing that was amazing was their Mac and Cheese Burger. They aren't your average run of the mill burger place, they are much better than that.”
Welcome to the neighborhood guys. Here’s to many successful years.
